Soul Sisters
Shana was one the first women that we were able to help here at 1in9. Her caring spirit, her incredible show of gratitude, and her courageous fight against breast cancer led me to write the following poem.
I drove Shana for five weeks back and forth from her home in Roanoke Rapids, NC to Chapel Hill for her weeks of treatment. We got to know each other during the time we spent together. From stops along the way for dinner, to helping her find a winter coat, to sharing a table at Mama Dips (the quentisential soul food stop in Chapel Hill)… Driving her, helping her and being a part of this amazing journey at 1in9 has not only helped in saving Shana’s life, but it has changed mine forever.

My Friend Devin…
Throughout this crazy journey, we have been so blessed – family here to help whenever we need, friends to help with the kids, and our Church family beside us to continuously pray. I don’t think that we could have made it without so many of you—and we want to say Thank You. Thank You from the bottom of our hearts…

In 1992, her medical career started as a nurse tech at Wakemed Hospital. By 1995, she was a Registered Nurse. She worked tirelessly to help mend those patients that were broken and provide compassion to those she cared for. She saved lives and is one of countless medical heroes that wore the uniform and carried the stethoscope for 16 years.
In June of 2010, her life was forever changed. She noticed a sore under her armpit and when it wasn’t getting any better, she decided to have a doctor look into it. After a biopsy and several other tests, her initial fears were confirmed: she had breast cancer… Stage 3. Now what?
A Tale of Two Teams
As the community continues to rally in support of 1in9, we’ve become involved several different with organizations and group, and, of course, we have tons of fun participating and cheering on team members during athletic events… We’ve had teams run in two local 5K races, sponsored a children’s soccer team, and created hockey jerseys for a championship-winning Adult Men’s Hockey team! 1in9 is so proud of the support we’ve received and now we present two tales of sportsmanship at its best!
