How You Can Help Ms. T
Recently, a new patient, Ms. T., was referred to 1in9 from UNC Cancer Center. She was referred by the hospital staff due to the family’s financial crisis resulting from her recent diagnosis of breast cancer.
Ms. T was diagnosed with breast cancer February 2011. She is a single mother of three school age children. Prior to her diagnosis, she worked as a Per Diem registered nurse in the critical care unit of her local hospital. Unfortunately, due to her status as a Per Diem worker, she is ineligible for any benefits, including health insurance coverage. In addition, she has no family living nearby to help with childcare or household duties.
What is 1in9?

1in9 Works with Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at UNC Hospital to Identify Patients in Need of Assistance
Every day, the 1in9 organization is assisting more and more ladies fight their personal battles against breast cancer. And every day, someone asks one of us, “What is 1in9?” or “What is 1in9 doing?” I am proud to share what the 1in9 staff of volunteers has been able to accomplish since our conception in October 2010.
1in9 joined forces with the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at UNC – one of the nation’s leading cancer treatment hospitals. The patients that are referred to 1in9 are experiencing extreme financial distress – and the assistance we provide often makes the difference as to whether the woman diagnosed with breast cancer can continue her treatment, or not. A “needs assessment” is performed for each woman – every situation and area of need is unique. We identify the areas of “critical concern” and help in many different ways…
A Story of Shana
Our 1in9 Family has continued to grow! Recently, we partnered up with Shana and continue helping throughout her journey. Our first story we bring to you, is from Jennifer Gregory, as she describes our first meeting with Shana.
Several weeks ago, I had the pleasure of going with Tanya from 1in9 to pick up Shana, our newest 1in9 family member, from her home near Roanoke Rapids in rural North Carolina to go to her radiation treatments in Chapel Hill.
Our Plan to Help
Since 1in9 began, we’ve been committed to finding ways to ease some of the burdens that come along with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Dr. Keith Amos and Nurse Navigator Deborah Ballard work with cancer patients every day, we thought “who better to ask?”
