PBS /UNC-TV Features Segment on 1in9
Recently, UNC-TV Public Broadcast Station aired a segment on its North Carolina Now program about 1in9 ! The segment spotlighted 1in9 and its founders , Stephanie and Eric Beguelin and illustrated how they began their non-profit organization. Ronda, one of our clients at UNC (and a cancer survivor!) was also interviewed and shared her experiences with 1in9. Both Stephanie and Ronda did a great job for the camera – and their story demonstrates how 1in9 is addressing the specific needs of a growing caseload of women at UNC Hospital.
Watch the video and forward it to others to help us spread the word about 1in9’s mission!
The CO$T of CANCER
For millions of women diagnosed with breast cancer, affording the costs that come along with their diagnosis is impossible. It has been estimated that the overall cost of breast cancer treatment (plus the “hidden” costs) can range between $50,000 and $100,000. Even those women fortunate enough to have insurance coverage face co-pay amounts of $25,000 or more.
Due to our nation’s struggling economy, many families now have difficulty meeting their normal monthly budget. A diagnosis of breast cancer immediately generates unexpected medical expenses. Many middle and low-income families are unable to afford the breast cancer treatments and therefore the patients skip their treatments or choose to leave their medication prescriptions unfilled.
A Tale of Two Teams
As the community continues to rally in support of 1in9, we’ve become involved several different with organizations and group, and, of course, we have tons of fun participating and cheering on team members during athletic events… We’ve had teams run in two local 5K races, sponsored a children’s soccer team, and created hockey jerseys for a championship-winning Adult Men’s Hockey team! 1in9 is so proud of the support we’ve received and now we present two tales of sportsmanship at its best!
It’s a HOT PINK Christmas!
Every December, my house transforms into a red and green winter wonderland as my family prepares for the holidays. This year, as I dealt with Stephanie’s breast cancer and as my involvement with 1in9 grew, PINK was all I could think about! I want pink everything! So of course, I ended up with my first pink Christmas tree…
It’s the first thing you see when you come into my home. The kids LOVE it – and I share the 1in9 story with every one that comes to visit.
The entire tree is decorated with pink – pink breast cancer ribbons, pink ornaments, and my favorite, pink flamingos! It just makes me smile when I look at it, and it has become everyone’s favorite tree! Sometimes in the evenings, I sit in the living room by myself and enjoy its glow.
