A Story of ONE Woman’s Journey
Last week, 1in9 had the opportunity to meet a very special woman at UNC Cancer Center. As we were filming a 1in9 video, Tina Shabin, one of the managers of the Patient and Family Resource Center, approached us and asked if we “had room for one more” on our 1in9 caseload. Unexpectedly, a breast cancer patient had walked into the Resource Center to ask Tina for help, as she needed money for bus fares and other living expenses. Ms. Shabin introduced us to our new 1in9 family member, Hildramae – and she graciously agreed to share her story.
Stephanie’s Journey: Chemotherapy Treatment #3
On December 29, Stephanie continued her breast cancer journey during her third chemotherapy treatment. Typically, patients say this is the most difficult treatment, as the cumulative effects of chemo tend to catch up with the patient.
Why I Share My Story
- A story from Tina Spaeth -
On May 7, 2002, at the age of 35, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and soon after had both breasts removed.
Eight and a half years later I was diagnose again with local recurrence. I was told at Christmas 2010. I am doing surgery on January 12, 2011 and will start chemo three to six weeks later…
Anyway… I have a ton of friends and family that all pray for me, but I was asked why I put news of my relapse on Facebook? In response, I told this woman, who is also my cousin, that if I can help, in some way, pave the road for some other person who is out there and scared and doesn’t know where to turn, that at least someone could point them to me.
Our Plan to Help
Since 1in9 began, we’ve been committed to finding ways to ease some of the burdens that come along with a diagnosis of breast cancer. Dr. Keith Amos and Nurse Navigator Deborah Ballard work with cancer patients every day, we thought “who better to ask?”
Keep on Fighting!
My Aunt Steph is the strongest person that I know. She has always been there for me and my sister no matter what. It has been hard for us to understand that there is a reason why God made her “the one in nine.” But, now that I am able to see how much she and my uncle are doing for other people as a result of her being sick, it gives an answer to the question: Why her?
